The Ladies Trials was a Pairs contest. It began with an all against all two rounds and only the Top 8 rated pairs reached the final cycle. Sylvia Figueira de Melo and Paula Abranches David won the final stage, second were María das Graças Poncioni and Heloisa Nogueira. According to regulations, these two couples classified to join the team Brazil Ladies, having the right to choose a third pair, between those located in the third and fifth place. They choose Leda Pain and Isabella Vargas de Andrade.

After the finals, Joao Paulo Campos told us this sad story, but as his team won the trials we can say it was with a happy ending:

 As dealer I received:  x  A Q 9 x x  10 9 x x  A J x and opened 1...as I felt a little thirsty I drink some water and when I looked again the table I realized that my open bid was 1...instead of 1...

My LHO (Guilherme Junqueira) passed and as I couldnt do nothing about it...pushed the bidding to the other side of the screen.  When the bidding returned my partner's bid was 3 = 12/15 with 4+ cards support and a singleton or a void.

I decided to continue with 3 asking for the short suit... hoping to hear 3NT= short...to pass, but his answer was 4 = void, so I continued with 4...hoping he could bid a 4 cuebid...to pass, but his bid was 5, without any hope I decided to pass expecting he could have 4 diamond cards.

My partner, Miguel Villas Boas,  almost had a heart attack after my pass...wondering what was going on... Guilherme Junqueira leaded and dummy appeared with: A Q J x x x x  K J x x  A x  - we paid 200. 6 was the other table contract, so the hand cost us 15 IMPs instead of giving us 11 IMPs.
