In 1956, the South American Bridge Association was invited to participate in the World Bridge Tournament to be held in the city ofCuomo, Italy in February 1958.

Up until that moment, the world tournament was a competition between only two teams, the US and European champions.

In 1957, the II South American Bridge Tournament was played in Santiago, Chile and it was the first regional tournament to classify for a world championship, with the participation of the four founding members: Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Uruguay.

Argentina was the winner, and secured the right to compete in the world championship in 1958.

Before this event started, Argentina was invited  by the Swiss Bridge Federation to play in a triangular tournament held  in St. Moritz. Among the members of the Swiss team was the future WBF president, Jaime Ortiz Patiño.

1958 was the only time when only 3 teams participated in a world championship, Argentina being the newcomer.

On the following year, the European, American and South American champions were joined by the winner of the 1958 event, adding up to 4 teams.

Dr. Marcelo Lerner, a member of that team and the dean of Argentinian masters, has kindly lent us two invaluable mementos: the St. Moritz tournament program and an invitation to the closing dinner of the 1958 world championship, signed by all the participants (click on the names for their history in the WBF)
